Normandie Hyatt Living off the grid in Vermont's Northern Green Mountains, creating beautiful collages of fabric, yarn, paper, plants and glass, she limits herself to working with locally handmade or recycled materials. Fabrics are reused, yarns are naturally-dyed, and paper comes from discarded wallpaper sample books. All pieces are stitched together; no glue is used. Each piece is unique and original. "The land. The way the sun shines across the Lamoille Valley. The texture of weaves. Colors made vivid by rain. Mysteries vast and dark. The geometry of a seedpod. Moss on boulders. Caves. Purple. Form and function. God."
Does she feel constrained by her decision to limit her materials? Not at all- " This narrowing of choices is by no means limiting to my work. Some magic occurs when I bring these materials together and the pieces seem to create themselves."
We're inclined to agree.
Prices range from $20 for Fabric Collage to $40 for Botanical Portraits.
