GreenSense- The Wild Garden

A poem by William Cleary

Silver maple energy,
where does your mother sap come from?

From below, down deep
where the earth around the root was once a mammoth's teeth,
or a wolf
or a grandmother, buried in wet tears,
famous for her deer brains soup
and total mastery of human skin

But who taught you how to absorb such history and intelligence?
and to transsubstantiate it into sap that loves to rise, maybe even fly,
imaging itself as the poise of a tree
with an open-arm welcome for eacb morning's sun?

Or green leaves that can inhale one spirit and exhale another
nursing the hungry mouths
of the amazing lung people below?

Dream on:
you could become syrup
for Bill's hot waffle:
become Bill.
How elegant.
