Earth Shell
- NOTE: CURRENTLY OFFLINE- What do you get when you mix potato starch, water, natural limestone (calcium carbonate) and a small amount of cellulose fiber? A strong, insulating packaging material that's like styrofoam, but much kinder to the environment. After use, it can be quickly composted, and will even break down into harmless materials if it is tossed away as litter. It's currently being tested by McDonald's as a possible nationwide replacement for styrofoam. (7k)

Free FAX for Free TV Time for Fair Elections- One of the driving forces behind political corruption in the U.S. is the expense- and effectiveness- of television advertising. This forces candidates to raise huge sums of money, and inevitably to be tempted to compromise their values in return, when they should be focussing on governing. Many countries eliminate this problem by requiring TV broadcasters to donate free airtime to candidates. Send a free fax to urge the U.S. gov't to do the same!
(More Interactivism here.)
* This Cassini site is now called No Nukes in Space Stop the Cassini Probe- Just when you thought we had begun to appreciate the dangers of playing with Plutonium... NASA plans to put over 70 pounds of Plutonium on a rocket (a Titan IV, like the Challenger) and send it into space. How dangerous is 70 pounds of Plutonium? If it were dispersed evenly, it would be enough to kill (via induced lung cancer) every man, woman and child on earth 70 times over. Even if no one is hurt by this irresponsible venture, it will cost taxpayers $1.5 billion. Can you think of a better use for this money? If so, write or call your representatives and sign the online petition at this site.
